MIKE SPENCER

Mike is the owner operator of Valley Strength and Conditioning

Mike has been in the fitness industry for over 18 years and has worked with general fitness, health and well being and rehab clients all the way through to high level athletes. Over the years Mike has gained huge amount of experience in understanding how to get the most out of his clients threw performance based training and strength and conditioning.
Mike has worked with many athletes over a wide range of disciplines. From individuals training sport specifically for sports such as Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Powerlifters and Strongman Strength athletes, Slalom snow skiing and Ice Hockey, and worked with many teams and academies, including the Otago Nuggets Basketball team.

Simply put, I believe training should be based around performance/movement goals.
Whether it be running a marathon, climbing the stairs at your house, or lifting heavy things, your body was made to move.
In my opinion, weight loss and muscle growth should be by-products of improving your bodies performance aspects, such has strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility/mobility, and movement competency.

Training isn’t just to “lose weight or gain muscle at all costs”, we can kill 2 birds with 1 stone, why not feel good at the same time?

I am a Physical Preparation (Strength and Conditioning) Coach and Post Graduate (Masters) Student based in Dunedin, New Zealand.  With an early beginning in competitive team and individual sports, I took a particular interest in Track & Field. Having competed from a local to national level, I changed my tack to Strength & Conditioning post a wave of chronic injuries. 
My studies and coaching experiences have led me to work alongside general populations and professional athletes alike. This has allowed me to form a training methodology that I believe can be adapted to best suit you or your teams needs. I coach athletes to thrive rather than simply survive and ensure that I aim to inspire, not instruct. My goal is to create a performance-driven, athlete-focused and coach-led environment that strives for success.
I have a deep passion for performance and I would love to assist you or your team to further success in any future athletic endeavors. Shaun Burrows

"I have been a part of the fitness industry for 5+ years, and during this time I have learnt invaluable lessons in character, accountability, and effective communication. I hold a Bachelors of Physical Education majoring in Exercise Sport Science & Exercise Prescription from the University of Otago, and am currently a post-graduate Sport & Exercise student with AUT. I am also accredited with the ASCA and SESNZ as a Strength and Conditioning Coach.
For the past 3 years I have held the position of High-Performance Trainer at Otago Boys High. Through my role at OBHS I have run S&C programs for both individuals and teams such as 1st XV & Senior Rugby, Touch, Rugby Sevens, and Otago U18 Representative. This has meant I have worked extensively with youth athletes who have competed nationally in Rugby and Athletics. In the community, I have worked with local Dunedin rugby clubs such as the Kaikorai Demons in 2019 and the Harbour Hawks in 2020. I am also passionate about maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle myself - within the last year I have completed two half marathons, and am looking at completing my first full marathon in the near future. I also do weight training, olympic lifting and have recently taken up road cycling!
